Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs

This image might be familiar to you or not, but I’m posting it here as it is something we all need to examine when facing adversity. Maslow’s hierarchy is based on the premise that all human beings have an inborn desire to be self-actualised, be all they can be, be the best version of themselves (be at the top of the pyramid). However, in order to reach that goal, several basic human needs have to be met first, starting from the bottom of the pyramid and working your way up.

Have a good look at it and evaluate where you are currently, which of your needs are being met in your life right now?

Suggested Reflection: Once you know where you find yourself on this hierarchy at the moment, please consider and reflect on the following questions.
  1. Has your position on this hierarchy changed as a direct result of the adversity you are currently facing or adversities you have faced in the past?
  2. How has it changed, from which level to which?
  3. Were these changes beyond your control or were they as a result of your own choices, actions or non-actions?
  4. How long have you been in your current situation?
  5. Are you satisfied with the way your life is now?
  6. If you are not satisfied with the way things are right now, are you able to change it, do you know how to change it and do you have a plan to change it?

These might be tough questions to ponder, but a valuable exercise if we’re going to get up from being knocked down and climb our way back up that pyramid.
